How Carpet is constructed

It is important to understand the two main methods of carpet construction as it is a large financial outlay for the client and they will have endless questions on why one costs more than another? Why one has a looser look, firmer feel, multicolored etc?

Today most carpets are produced by the tufting method of manufacture. It consists of hundreds of needles, which thread the yarn through the backing (jute or polypropylene), which forms loops or tufts to the required length.

The option then depending on the type of machine is to cut the loops to form a cut pile tufted carpet or leave the loops to form a looped pile tufted carpet.

The backing is then given a layer of adhesive coating to fix the tufts in position; another layer of backing is then fixed for added strength.

Axminster carpet

Traditionally carpets were woven on a loom. Many still are and are named from the type of loom that they are manufactured from. Axminster, for example, different colored tufts are inserted into the weave from above so that they make up the pile but do not run in the back. By this method, many colors can be used and most Axminster's are patterned. Wilton is another example, it is woven in continuous strands and only a small number of colors can be used on the loom. The pile yarn is woven so that the colors not showing on the surface lie on the back. It is a cut, looped or cut and looped pile. Patterned Wiltons are possible but at the high end of the quality and price range.

All woven carpets have the backing threads and pile woven at the same time, which means that the tufts are fixed in place. Weaving is a well-known method for producing patterns. Woven carpets are generally slower to make than tufted. You can generally distinguish between the two by viewing the back sides.

Both methods of construction are of a high quality and your choice will come down to the look that you require.

Carpets can be made by other methods, bonding and knitting. Bonded carpets are constructed by gluing tufts of pile directly onto a backing. Knitted carpets have a more complex construction method than Axminsters or Wiltons. Knitting the pile yarn and backing together achieve this type of method.

The combination of research and development in yarn and machinery married with specialist textile designers and the demand from the consumer is creating a burgeoning new wave of innovative and creative textures, styles, color combinations and patterns.

Just when you think you've seen everything - a new range is released and it opens up new doors for selecting schemes and creating wonderful new environments. The hardest job is keeping up with the choices! Overall the basics still apply and what you will learn here is a good grounding for appreciating the new product to come.

The Choice of Fabrics

It is most important that the fabric will drape or hang well. In general the heavier the fabric, the tighter the weave should be to ensure that the fabric will hang well.

The looser the weave the more prone it is to environmental factors like heat and moisture which will mean that you can physically see your drapes rise and fall.

The most common types of fabrics that are used for drapery are as follows: sheers and nets, most commonly synthetic, used for privacy.

Casements, which are made from loosely woven textured yarns and also used for privacy.

Prints, probably the most popular, these are generally made from tightly woven cotton or cotton polyester blends and are of medium weight and practical from most window treatment situations.

Satins and jacquards, mostly for formal applications, heavy tightly woven supple fabrics that hang very straight and formally.

Sheers or nets are a popular choice for casual uses of curtains, shown in this photograph, they are a perfect fabric choice for a difficult set of French doors. The fabric diffuses the natural light but you can still see out and access the door handles in the center.

There are no rules, you can use almost any fabric for drapery with careful thought about the application, as long as you can justify your selection with all your knowledge – go for it, dare to be different.

Curtains – The 'ins and outs'

There are only a few simple rules to follow here; the length of the hung curtain should be to the floor or the windowsill. Anything in between looks rather odd.

There is a trend today of puddling curtains, this is where they are made longer than the height required and “puddle” on the floor, this requires a skill in fabric selection, so that they sit well. It is used commonly in living rooms and bedrooms.

With puddle curtains on a hand drawn track, make sure that the width of the curtain is not excessive as they become heavy and difficult to draw back. They are also prone to picking up all the fluff from your floor, so a little bit more attention is required to keeping them looking smart.

The top of the curtain (the heading), for all curtains can be at ceiling height, above or at the top of the window frame or flush with the window reveal.

It all depends on the space that you have. Do keep your choice constant in your home as it can look very odd if some curtain heads are fixed at different heights to others, especially when you can view through from room to room.

The finished length of ceiling to floor curtains should leave a 10mm gap, so that they don’t catch the floor and are easy to draw back, the gap for finishing at a windowsill only requires 5mm.

For safety reasons, never cover radiator heaters with curtains, look for another solution, either stop the curtains short of the heaters or use a blind as an alternative style of window treatment.

Consistency in design of the window treatments allows for a symmetrical form to be created here in this photograph. The head of the curtains are all the same height and the window swag and tail valance details are all the same and they are all held back at the bottom of the window sill which provides a regular frame for the windows and creates a flow and rhythm to the window treatments.

Sheer and Net Curtains

Sheers or Voiles

Sheers, voiles or nets are fine translucent fabrics. They are used to cut down the amount of sunlight that enters a room and to create a small amount of privacy.

They can be used on their own or combined with heavier curtains to be drawn at night. For a long time they were only available in white or cream.

The selection available today is very extensive ranging from colors, beaded, textures, striped, rainbow effects, metallic, threaded with flower forms, embroidered with designs, sequined ... the list goes on.

So you can see that they are quite a fashion statement for your window. A very good alternative to blinds.

The use of sheers in this contemporary apartment allows diffused light to enter and makes a subtle design statement. They are ceiling hung on a track behind a pelmet in the form of a lowered ceiling and the curtains seem to float.

Sheers are a great way to add soft and subtle decorative curtains as seen in this photograph. The sheers diffuse the sunlight as under curtains, and then the gold decorative curtain to the side is pulled through a ring to act as a tieback, very clever design accessory.

The heading options vary greatly, from pencil pleats for a lovely fullness to inverted pleat for a more flat sophisticated look, to a simple gathered head that will be covered with a pelmet, valance, swags and tails or a scarf drapery.

They are also commonly threaded through rods or poles using a casement heading.


Nets or Net Curtains

Net curtains are similar to sheers, but the construction of the fabric is different. The strands of yarn are interlocked to form patterns of fine or large holes in the fabric. They can be fine or coarse, with varying degrees of complex patterns.

They are hung in a similar fashion to sheers.

Layaknya elemen-elemen penyusun sebuah bangunan, gajebo juga dianggap sebagai hasil dari sebuah karya seni. Setiap elemen dan bagian-bagian yang menyusunnya ibarat syair lagu dengan komposisi nada-nada yang sempurna. Dalam sejarahnya, gajebo atau bale bukanlah barang atau sesuatu yang baru bagi masyarakat Indonesia. Sejak jaman (atau zaman?) dahulu gajebo sering dipakai untuk duduk lesehan bersantai sambil membicarakan banyak hal. Berdasarkan fungsi gajebo yang sering dipergunakan untuk duduk bersantai, mengobrol dengan tetangga, melangsungkan pesta pernikahan atau ulang tahun, atau sekedar bengong maka gajebo sering disebut sebagai bale bengong. Namun berdasarkan perkembangannya kini, fungsi gajebo perlahan berubah menjadi aksesoris pelengkap untuk meningkatkan nilai estetika dan keindahan dari sebuh rumah. Sehingga kadang muncul anggapan-anggapan bahwa sesorang yang dirumahnya memiliki gajebo akan masuk dalam kelas tersendiri.

Mungkin masuk dalam kategori rumah mewah, karena gajebo diletakkan ditaman/halam rumah yang luas untuk dimanfaatkan oleh sang pemilik rumah. Saya pribadi tidak mengerti kenapa anggapan seperti ini muncul? padahal jika ditinjau berdasarkan harganya, sebuah gajebo bukanlah sesuatu yang mahal untuk dimiliki.. Dari analisa saya, mungkin yang menjadi masalah atau yang membuat anggapan ini muncul karena untuk memiliki gajebo anda harus memiliki taman dibelakang, disamping atau didepan rumah anda, dan taman tersebut membutuhkan space/lahan tambahan, artinya anda harus memiliki tanah yang cukup luas, dan tanah tersebut (dikota besar) harganya sangat mahal. Alih-alih untuk membeli tanah tambahan, ditengah kondisi ekonomi yang makin sulit seperti sekarang ini, bagi sebagian orang mungkin dana tersebut lebih bermanfaat untuk memenuhi kebutuhan primer yang lain (misalnya untuk biaya pendidikan atau biaya kuliah putra-putri mereka).

Desain gajebo sendiri sangat khas, karena gajebo dibangun terpisah dari bangunan utama (rumah), berdiri sendiri diarea taman yang bentuk dan desainnya bermacam-macam. Tetapi pada umumnya gajebo dapat dikenali dari bentuk dasarnya yang terdiri dari atap, tiang-tiang penyusun tanpa dilengkapi dinding, dan lantai yang elevasinya sedikit lebih tinggi dari elevasi permukaan tanah disekitarnya.

Untuk modelnya, gajebo terbagi dalam dua model yang umum. Model klasik dan model hasil perpaduan antara modern-klasik. Untuk gajebo dengan model yang klasik lumayan mudah untuk dikenali, karena bentuk desainnya menyerupai bangunan adat jawa atau bangunan adat bali yang mengaplikasikan banyak ukiran atau ornamen. Sedangkan model hasil perpaduan modern-klasik memiliki ciri dengan gaya yang simpel, tidak mementingkan detail pada bangunannya, dan permukaan lantai gajebo yang terkesan datar/flat. Yang perlu diingat, sebenarnya tidak ada aliran atau nama khusus pada gajebo, karena desain gajebo umumnya disesuaikan dengan bangunan utama/rumah. Jika desain rumah anda art deco, bisa saja anda sebut gajebo anda model art deco, atau jika desain rumah anda kontemporer, bisa saja anda menyebut gajebo anda model kontemporer.

Bentuk gajebo umumnya berbentuk geometris, segi empat, segi enam, atau lingkaran/circle. Untuk konstruksinya, biasanya gajebo dibuat permanent, meskipun ada juga yang dibuat dengan model dan bahan yang mampu untuk dicopot-pasang seperti gajebo berbahan aluminium atau gajebo dari bahan bambu buatan Indonesia yang banyak diekspor keluar negeri..

Untuk anda yang memilki taman, atau memiliki space lahan didepan, dibelakang, atau disamping rumah, ada baiknya anda menganggarkan sedikit dana untuk membuat atau membeli gajebo. Bukan untuk sekedar dilihat atau dipamarkan, tetapi untuk kebahagiaan anda dan anggota keluarga.. Anda tertarik untuk memiliki gajebo?

Air Terjun dan Fountain Untuk Taman Yang Mungil

Suara gemericik dan alunan aliran yang dihasilkan oleh air terjun maupun fountain tak pernah gagal menghibur penikmatnya. Karena itu, banyak orang menginginkan fountain hadir di halamannya.

Namun terkadang air terjun-terutama yang berbentuk tebing-memerlukan area yang cukup luas. Untuk Anda yang hanya memiliki area kecil dan mungil, jangan berkecil hati. Ada air terjun bergaya etnis bali, yang berukuran kecil, hanya sekitar 2 m2.

Diletakkan Dimana?

Air terjun Bali bisa diletakkan di taman depan atau di dalam rumah, atau bisa juga diletakkan “sendirian” tanpa ditemani tanaman-tanaman hias. Jika ingin meletakkannya di taman, letakkan di tembok/sisi taman yang kosong untuk menghilangkan kesan sepi pada sisi tersebut.

Air terjun ini biasanya dilengkapi dengan kolam kecil di depannya. Anda bisa menambahkan ikan hias atau tanaman air agar penampilannya makin alami. Sebaiknya tanaman air ditanam di dalam pot dan tidak langsung ditanam di dasar kolam. Hal ini untuk menjaga agar air kolam tidak menjadi keruh. Taburkan juga batu koral kecil di atas pot, untuk mencegah tanah larut oleh air.

Sirkulasi Air

Air terjun biasanya dibuat berputar dengan menggunakan pompa air bertenaga listrik. Pompa dapat diletakkan di kolam atau disembunyikan di bawah konstruksi air terjun. Yang lebih tampak indah tentunya jika pompa disembunyikan di dalam konstruksi. Namun jika sulit melakukannya, pompa bisa juga disembunyikan di antara tanaman air.

Agar jatuhnya air nampak lebih “indah”, beberapa penjual menemukan ide menarik yang bisa ditiru. Salah satunya yaitu dengan menggunakan kaca di pinggir tiap undakan atau dengan membuat beberapa lubang di pipa paralon atas.

Membuat sendiri

Anda bisa membuat sendiri air terjun ini. Konstruksinya dibuat dari batu bata yang disusun dan direkatkan dengan adukan trasram (dengan komposisi semen : pasir, 1 : 2). Untuk pelapis luarnya Anda bisa menggunakan batu alam yang tersedia di toko-toko yang khusus menjual batu alam. Anda bisa mengombinasikan beberapa jenis batu alam yang biasa dipakai untuk membuat air.

Beberapa jenis batu alam yang biasa dipakai sebagai elemen penyusun air terjun Bali antara lain andesit, palimanan, batu candi, dan batu relief balian yang ditatah sehingga membentuk alur-alur. Agar batu-batu tersebut tidak mudah berlumut, sebaiknya diberi coating (pelapis) khusus batu alam. Pelapis ini terdiri dari 2 jenis, yaitu pelapis yang natural (texturized) dan pelapis yang mengkilat (polished).

Agar Air Tak Perlu Sering Diganti

Ada 2 alternatif yang dapat dilakukan agar air selalu jernih :

Menggunakan filter yang dibuat di bawah dasar kolam hingga kolam pun menjadi lebih dalam. Filter seperti ini lebih cocok digunakan untuk kolam yang cukup luas.

Filter yang kedua ini lebih cocok untuk air terjun dengan kolam kecil. Filter dibuat dari batu zeolit yang diletakkan di atas ijuk atau busa. Filter ini bisa diletakkan di kolam atau di dalam undakan. Sebelum dipakai, batu sebaiknya dicuci terlebih dahulu agar kotoran dan debu pada batu hilang.

“Aku baca postingannya mas Aria ttg pemilihan warna utk kamar tidur yag menenangkan. warna2 apa saja yg menenangkan? kalo warna biru gmn? aku suka warna biru, n kebetulan kemaren sempet buat terapi insomnia, jd pake warna biru. aku pengen rombak kamar lagi, tapi kendalanya, kamarku cuma 4x4 dan barang2ku banyak. aku mo tanya nih, gmn solusinya? sdg aku gak mungkin keluarin barang2ku itu/mungkin harus diganti/dikurangi. kamarku bkn hanya aku pake buat istirahat, tapi juga aku buat kerja. kalo pulang kerja, aku suka nerusin kerjaan di kamarku. gmn biar kamarku bisa lbh berbeda, sesuai dg umurku (aku 23 thn), nyaman tentunya. itu dulu deh mas....nanti klo dah dibalas. siapa tahu bisa berkembang lagi, he...he...thx ya...”

Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari , tanpa sadar warna dapat mempengaruhi tubuh kita. Dapat dibayangkan bila anda tinggal di suatu ruangan yang berwarna hitam kelam atau coklat tua , pastilah tubuh dan pikiran anda enggan untuk berlama-lama tinggal di tempat tersebut. Contoh sederhana tersebut menjadi salah satu dasar dari terapi warna ini. Jika kombinasi warna tertentu dapat menyebabkan pikiran kita stress dan depresi maka pastilah ada kombinasi warna lain yang menyebabkan pikiran kita tenang dan rileks.

Banyak praktisi dan peneliti mendasarkan terapi warna pada energi tubuh yang terfokus pada tujuh titik mayor yang disebut dengan ‘ cakra’. Setiap cakra ini berkorelasi dengan sistem organ dan warna tertentu. Pada kasus mbak, kita mengkhususkan pada fungsi dari warna biru..Hubungan antara cakra, organ dan warna biru adalah :

Biru : berhubungan dengan cakra tenggorokan . Warna biru merupakan warna yang menenangkan dan sangat baik digunakan untuk mengatasi insomnia, gastritis, artritis, nyeri pinggang bawah, sakit tenggorokan, asma dan migren. Warna pelengkapnya adalah oranye.

Sedangkan penggunaan warna biru untuk relaksasi :
Pernafasan warna : teknik ini merupakan salah satu bentuk teknik visualisasi. Anda dapat membayangkan menghirup dan menghembuskan warna tertentu. Teknik ini dapat Anda lakukan sebelum tidur atau saat Anda bangun pagi hari.

• Carilah tempat yang nyaman untuk duduk atau berbaring.

• Bernafaslah dalam , teratur dan perlahan.

• Bayangkan diri anda dikelilingi oleh warna tertentu yang anda inginkan.

• Saat Anda bernafas, bayangkan tubuh anda menghirup warna ini dan bayangkan warna tersebut menyebar di seluruh tubuh anda.

• Saat Anda menghembuskan nafas bayangkan Anda menghembuskan warna pasangannya ( seperti saat Anda menghirup nafas berwarna biru maka hembuskan warna oranye. Warna kuning dengan ungu muda, hijau dengan ungu tua ).

Selain dengan teknik tersebut di atas bila memungkinkan Anda dapat pula menata kembali ruangan anda dengan warna yang sesuai. Misalnya saja Anda dapat memulainya dengan mengganti warna sprei maupun sarung bantal dengan warna biru bila saat ini Anda menderita stress dan ketegangan.

Gambar salah satu sisi dinding dengan cat berwarna biru dikombinasikan dengan warna oranye sebagai warna minor untuk membuat kesan bidang pada listplank dan area objek gambar, lukisan, cermin , dll.

Soal kombinasi warna cat dikamar, anda bisa menggabungkan warna biru sebagai warna dominan, dan ditambahkan dengan warna oranye. Oranye bisa anda gunakan untuk warna listplank, atau membuat unsur garis atau bidang (misalnya sebagai frame lukisan, bidang tempat meletakkan cermin, dsb) didalam ruangan, kemudian didalam unsur bidang tersebut anda juga bisa menambahkan perhiasan dinding dengan unsur warna biru, misalnya : gambar panorama di pantai, atau birunya air laut, dsb.

Untuk fungsi kamar sebagai tempat kerja dan kamar yang terasa terlalu sempit, anda mungkin tidak harus mengeluarkan semua barang2 anda.. tapi pilihlah barang apa saja yg paling penting menurut intensitas pemakaiannya. Idealnya dalam kamar yg difungsikan sebagai tempat kerja, biasanya terdapat barang : 1 buah lemari (ukuran tidak jumbo yah), 1 meja kerja yg bisa difungsikan sebagai meja komputer, rak buku yang digantungkan di dinding, tempat tidur (spring bed untuk 2 orang tp bukan yg queen size) + tv. Penempatan meja komputer/meja kerja sebaiknya berdekatan dengan rak buku anda.. Sehingga antara meja kerja dan rak masih terdapat dalam satu area yang mudah anda jangkau. Rak gantung, selain sebagai tempat menyimpan koleksi buku anda, juga dapat anda tambahkan fungsinya sebagai tempat menyimpang koleksi souvenir, aksesoris, atau artworks (seperti: foto frame, boneka, jam, dsb). Asal penataannya rapi saya yakin muat dalam kamar ukuran 4x4.

Satu hal lagi yang mungkin perlu diperhatikan, jangan terlalu banyak menyimpan alat/barang elektronik (kulkas, water heater/dispenser, cake toaster, dll) dikamar..karna barang-barang elektronik tsb akan menghasilkan suhu/temperatur yg panas. Disamping itu juga jika tidak terlalu banyak menyimpan barang dikamar, sirkulasi udara akan lebih baik, sehingga kesegaran kamar akan lebih terjaga.
